I remember watching the Dean Martin show when I was little. Do you?? Or are you too young?? If you do, remember the "Golddigger Girls" ?? -- they were TAME compared to the girls on TV shows out there now. But Dean was just the epitome of "the cool cat" - wasn't he?? He was just so handsome and cool. I remember him smoking on air, and drinking his "drink" -- something on the rocks, maybe bourbon or scotch. I was telling this to my son and he said, "Wow, we wouldn't see that now-a-days! Now it's all a PG world." And I said: "You're right! But you know what? That was entertainment, the "movie stars" and NOW, there might be PG stuff, but then you also have the commercials for "Girls Gone Wild." (Which totally disgusts me, FYI. These are someone's daughters!) As I said to my son: There seems to be no in-between now. It's either wholesome or totally not acceptable -- it's an affront to the good values of well-rounded families.
Sooooooo, anyway, I just wanted to post this, to see if anyone else remembers the "Cool Cats" -- Dean and Frank and Sammy... I know there were others involved in the Rat Pack: like Peter Lawford (who was handsome too!) and Joey Bishop (who was VERY funny!!) -- but I was concentrating on the Top 3: Again - Dean, Frank, and Sammy. Oh, weren't those the times???!!!!
Here's some pics from the internet to remind you:
(P.S. Look at them, with the cigs!!)
Best,Gloria
Oh Gloria, this is SO WEIRD -- Just a couple days ago I had a dream about Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. They dropped by for a cocktail one evening and, of course, I was great chums with them, so it was just lovely to see them. Kenny happened into the room where we were enjoying our drinks and had never heard of them either -- can you believe it? So I graciously introduced him. He thought both Dean and Jerry were a bit pompous, so didn't hang around too long. He thought of an excuse to hit the high road, but Dean and Jerry and I had the greatest evening. I always thought that Jerry was a bit jealous of Dean, but really Jerry certainly had his own gifts, longevity being one of them!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it a coincidence that you recently thought about them too? We must have both seen a commercial or something that had Dean in it.
While growing up I had a neighbor who reminded me so much of Sammy Davis, Jr. It was kind of creepy. He looked like him and acted just like him, but had no talent at all. Maybe that's why I never cared for Sammy. He reminded me too much of my neighbor. How about Flip Wilson? Wasn't he the funniest? His humor was considered a bit risque, but such a delight.
Loved 'em all -- Those shows were so entertaining.
It's crazy to think of what the younger generation has missed out on....rotary dial phones with cords, black and white TV & movies, life without video games, computers, ipods....ah, life was simpler. Linda
ReplyDeleteGloria your are so cute and funny! I'll bet you are a great singer too.

This is one of my favorite genres or times. I loved them all, how fab and stylish they looked with their cocktails and hats. And oh my Frank Sinatra's voice, I don't think anyone can sing better than he did. I always had a crush on him and I'm only 44!

ReplyDeleteOK I hate to admit but I remember Sammy because my mom listened to that music but I will now burst your bubble I read ALOT so I will read almost anything just to read and I especially like history and biographies don't ask me why I read a book by a woman who knew Sammy and she wrote absolutely disgusting things about him too put it lightly he was a HUGE Pervert!LOL Sorry Gloria but I am from New York and I tell it like it is.
ReplyDeleteThey were a big part of my youth. That was the music my parents played and sang along with. As for the smoking and drinking...for me that was classy...reminds me of when my parents had cocktail parties...and all the ladies were dressed to the 9's, the men in suit and tie...everyone standing around chatting and laughing while seductively smoking and drinking. Good fun! That was then, and this is now...alas!
ReplyDeleteooh thanks for dropping in and leaving such a nice note.. I remember the rat pack! cool post.
